WordPress Permalink Settings

Permalinks are the permanent URLs to your WordPress Pages, Posts, and Custom Post Types. These should not be changed and are intended to be permanent. This prevents indexing or crawl errors by search engines, and errors from other websites or properties that have linked to Pages or Posts in your website.

Common Settings

Select how you want your URLs to appear.

  • Plain  – This is not recommended because it uses a querystring and your pages and posts will not be able to be cached which means your Pages and Posts may take longer to load in web browsers.
  • Day and name – This is recommended if you are posting very frequently (several times per day). Pages will not display the day, month, and year.
  • Month and name – This is recommended if you are posting regular but not multiple times per day. Pages will not display the month and year.
  • Numeric – This method lacks any context or key terms. This is not recommended.
  • Post name – This is the default and recommened method unless you are blogging regularly and want the reference of post date in your URLs.
  • Custom Structure – This allows you to build your own Permalink structure. Learn More – https://wordpress.org/support/article/using-permalinks/#structure-tags

Optional

This section allows you to overwrite the default archive URLs for Post Categories and Post Tags

  • Category base – Overwrite the default “/category/” permalink with your own term.
  • Tag base – Overwrite the default “/tag/” permalink with your own term.
